Debt, Stock Markets, and Worry
I was watching the news over the weekend and again today as the commentators were discussing the country’s debt issues and the falling stock market. I don’t want to sound like I don’t care because I am aware that many people’s retirement accounts have taken a beating the last few days. In fact, I’m sure mine has. I just haven’t checked it to see.
However, as I was reading a story online about how people were concerned about the future I remembered a couple of passages of scripture that the Holy Spirit brought to my mind to help me stay focused on what’s important.
Jesus said,” Don’t lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven…”
And in the same chapter He also said, ” Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious, also translated as worried, about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself.”
In spite of everything going on in Washington and the financial markets around the world, stay focused on Christ! The things happening in the world won’t magically change or get better because you do, but your focus will change. You will also be able to stand firm, not worry, and trust Christ to bring us through the trials of life. I know He’s always been faithful in my life when I’ve been willing to trust Him!
Note: all scripture references are from Gospel of Matthew chapter 6 ESV.
